Quite the sisters. Two young ladies, magnificent silk gowns, a velvet drape and a little dog who appears to understand perfectly well that he is part of the family portrait.
Present yourself. Choose your size and finish, then send us a clear photograph. We shall arrange the likeness and place you, quite convincingly, within the original portrait.
The original
Mary and Elizabeth Royall, John Singleton Copley, circa 1758, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, accession 25.49.
The story
Copley painted the adolescent daughters of Isaac Royall Jr., one of colonial Massachusetts's wealthiest families. Their expensive silk gowns, imported lace, velvet drapery and fashionable King Charles spaniel were deliberately chosen to communicate family wealth and social position. The painting is one of Copley's notable portraits of children and demonstrates the young artist's remarkable command of fabric, texture and likeness.
Fine Art Paper: museum-quality fine-art reproduction. Matte Cotton Canvas: a softly textured canvas finish for a more traditional painted appearance.
