The story
Adalbert Begas was a German painter whose work belonged to the nineteenth-century European tradition of formal portraiture. This portrait is signed and dated 1865 and presents its young sitter against a dark, restrained background, with the red ribbon at the collar providing the single note of colour. The result is quiet, elegant and remarkably self-possessed.
