The original
Louis Gueymard as Robert le Diable, Gustave Courbet, 1857, Metropolitan Museum of Art, object 19.84.
The story
Courbet painted the tenor Louis Gueymard in his most famous role, the title character of Meyerbeer’s opera Robert le Diable. The theatrical setting is medieval, dramatic and wonderfully excessive. In other words, ideal for a portrait.
Fine Art Paper: museum-quality fine-art reproduction. Matte Cotton Canvas: a softly textured canvas finish for a more traditional painted appearance.
Category: THE GENTLEMAN.
