The Distinguished Gentleman.
A gentleman of uncertain identity, impeccable curls and a rather impressive capacity for looking as though he has just been introduced to someone important.
This seventeenth-century portrait has travelled through several identities over the centuries. Once thought to depict an early American gentleman, it is now attributed to a French painter of the seventeenth century.
The identity may have changed. The dignity has not.
